GARY BREEN
Born: 12/12/73 Height: 6’3”

Gary had spells with Charlton Athletic, Maidstone United, Gillingham, Peterborough United and Birmingham City before joining Coventry in the 1996/97 season. In October 1992 he won his first U-21 cap against Denmark and progressed to the Senior ranks coming on as a substitute against Portugal at Lansdowne Road on May 29th 1996. He scored his first international goal against Holland in June of the same year.

STEPHEN CARR
Born: 29/8/76 Height: 5’9”

Stephen has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premiership in the last two seasons and deservedly broke into the Irish senior squad in 1999, winning his first cap against Sweden in April that year. He also won a Worthington Cup medal with Tottenham the same month.

KENNY CUNNINGHAM
Born: 28/6/71 Height: 5’11”

Kenny played for the Republic at Youth Under-21 and B levels before winning his first cap at Senior level against the Czech Republic in Prague on April 24th 1996. He had spells at Home Farm, Tolka Rovers and Millwall before joining Wimbledon in November 1994. In March 1997 he captained the side for the first time against the Czech Republic.

GARY DOHERTY

Gary Doherty looked likely to make a breakthrough at club and international level this season, but a broken leg in August ruled him out for much of the season. Mick McCarthy has used the former Luton man as a makeshift striker though his performances in Tottenham's defence suggest that his future lies at the back. Doherty, whose parents are from Donegal, first came to attention during the 1999 World U-20 Championships in Nigeria. He progressed in the U-21 squad before Mick McCarthy gave him his Senior debut against Greece in 2000.

RICHARD DUNNE
Born: 21/9/79 Height: 6’2”

Another player from the Home Farm production line. Known at the Honey Monster as a teenager due to his massive frame. He burst into the Everton first team at just 17 and became the youngest Toffee to appear in a Merseyside derby in 1997. Twice drafted into the Senior international squad, he had to wait until April 26 2000 before finally winning his first cap against Greece. Starred in the UEFA U-18 Championships winning team of 1998. Joined Manchester City in October 2000.

CURTIS FLEMING
Born: 8/10/68 Height: 5’10”

Former St Patricks Athletic player who moved to Middlesbrough in 1991 for £50,000. Has played for the Republic at U-21 and U-23 levels and won his first Senior cap against the Czech Republic in Prague on April 24 1996.

IAN HARTE
Born: 31/8/77 Height: 5’9”

Ian was a Republic of Ireland Youth and U-21 international and had a dramatic rise through the ranks in the 1995/96 season. Although only playing four times for his club Leeds United , he won his first Senior cap when he came on as a substitute against Croatia on June 2nd 1996. He scored his first international goal against Bolivia the same month.

GARY KELLY
Born: 9/7/74 Height: 5’8”

Part of a triumphant Home Farm schoolboy set-up before joining a long list of ex-Farm players at Leeds United. Started off as a striker but made his mark as a defender in 1993 and has gone on to become club captain at Elland Road. Made his Senior international debut against Russia in 1994 and went on to star in the World Cup that year. Uncle of club and Ireland colleague Ian Harte, Gary is a native of Drogheda.

STEVE STAUNTON
Born: 19/1/69 Height: 6’1”

Began his career with Dundalk before signing for Liverpool in his teens. Briefly on loan to Bradford before he made his breakthrough on Merseyside, he moved to Villa in 1991 for £1.1m. Back again with the ’Pool on foot of a Bosman transfer in 1998, he returned to Villa in November 2000. Debuted for the Republic in 1988, against Tunisia, and is on target to become Ireland’s first 100-cap international.

ANDY O’BRIEN
Born: 29/6/79 Height: 6’2”

Signed for Newcastle in March 2001 from Bradford, and has impressed supporters as well as his team-mates there, especially with an equaliser against Sunderland in his first weeks on Tyneside. Earned his first Senior international cap against Estonia in Tallinn, having been with the U-21s until just days earlier.

JOHN O'SHEA
Born: 30/4/81 Height:

John O'Shea made his debut as a substitute against Croatia in 2001. He was a member of the Republic's U-16 side that won the European Championships in 1998 while still at Waterford Bohemians. He moved to Manchester United that summer and has earned a place in the first team squad at Old Trafford. He has made a number of impressive performances this season and recently signed a new contract.
