UEFA Qualifying Tournament

The Procedure:

In the first phase the 51 nations were separated into five pools according to their performances in qualifying for France 98 and Euro 2000 (France as holders qualified automatically; this will not apply to the winners of the 2002 Cup). They were then drawn into four groups of five nations and five groups of six nations.

The nine group winners qualified automatically. There were then four play-offs between eight of the runners-up from the group stage. The winners of the play-offs qualified. Ireland, the nation which was not drawn out for a European play-off, took on Iran, which had won an intergroup play-off between the two Group runners-up in the Asian Football Confederation tournament, in an inter-Federal play-off for a place in the Finals.

A total of 236 matches were played, in which 677 goals were scored (an average of 2.84 per match).
