Underage Competition Formats 2021
Broadly speaking, the underage competitions follow similar patterns: a League, a Shield and a Cup. However, all teams begin together (in groups) in an open competition designated "Phase One", following which the less successful contest the Shield while the more successful progress to Phase Two of the League.
"Phase One"
Double Round-Robins (i.e. home and away games) in Phase One for U14 and U15. Single Round-Robins in Phase One for all others.
"Phase Two" Leagues
In U14 and U15, the top two of each group progress to two groups of five, single Round-Robin, with the top four of those groups to contest the Quarter-Finals.
In U17, U19 and WU19, the top Phase One teams progress to a single group which determines the League Champions: U17, the top 3 teams from each Phase1 group play a single Round-Robin; U19, the top 5 teams from each Phase1 group play a single Round-Robin; WU19, the top 2 from each Phase1 group and the best 3rd place team play a double Round-Robin.
In WU17, the top 2 from each Phase1 group and the two best 3rd place teams progress into 2 groups of 4, to play a double Round-Robin with the top 2 from each Phase2 group qualifying for the League Semi Finals.
"Phase Two" Shields
U14 & U15: 3 groups of 5, single Round-Robin with the top 2 from each group and the two best 3rd place teams progressing to the Shield Quarter-Finals. teams will not face a team they have already played in Phase 1.
U17: Two groups of 8 teams, single Round-Robin, with the top two from each group progressing to the Shield Semi-Finals.
U19: One group of 5 teams and one group of 6 teams, double Round-Robin, with the top two from each group progressing to the Shield Semi-Finals.
WU17 & WU19: Two groups of four teams, double Round-Robin, the top two in each group through to Semi-Finals.
Cups
All Men's Cups First and Second Rounds are regionalised, with open draw thereafter. Women's Cups will have an open draw after their First Rounds.
Venues
Quarter-FInals and Semi-Finals are predrawn. Determination of home advantage for Quarter-FInals and Semi-Finals is predrawn except where 'best-placed' teams are involved, when an open draw will decide.
All Finals are to be played at neutral venues.
Groups
In groups with an odd number of teams, one team will be idle each week.
U14: Five groups of five teams.
Group A: Cavan-Monaghan, Finn Harps, Derry City, Sligo Rovers, Mayo FC
Group B: Athlone Town, Galway United, St Patricks Athletic, Dundalk, Longford Town
Group C: Bray Wanderers, Bohemians, Shelbourne, Cabinteely, Drogheda United
Group D: Carlow-Kilkenny, UCD, Shamrock Rovers, Wexford, Klub Kildare
Group E: Kerry League, Cobh Ramblers, Waterford, Treaty United, Cork City
U15: Five groups of five teams.
